From the recording Zion's Chapel
This beautiful hymn was written by Timothy Dwight, grandson of Jonathan Edwards and President of Yale University. The story goes that the philosophy of the French Revolution was invading Yale, which up to this point had been a solid Christian college. Timothy Dwight hit his knees, (and I am sure, defended the faith from his heart), and Christianity prevailed. I have written a bridge which is sung between the verses.
Lyrics
I Love Thy Kingdom Lord
By Timothy Dwight, (1752-1817) and Aaron Williams, (1731-1776), Bridge By Charlotte Ryerson
I love Thy kingdom, Lord,
The place of Thine abode
,
The church our blest Redeemer saved
With His own precious blood.
I love Thy church, O God;
Her walls before Thee stand,
Dear as the apple of Thine eye,
And graven on Thy hand.
BRIDGE:
For her peace and her purity
Lord I will strive
Pour out Thy Holy Spirit
Set our hearts on fire
For Thy church Thou hast died, now let Thy Church arise!!
For her my tears shall fall;
For her my prayers ascend;
To her my cares and toils be giv’n,
Till toils and cares shall end.
REPEAT BRIDGE
For her my tears shall fall;
For her my prayers ascend;
To her my cares and toils be giv’n,
Till toils and cares shall end.
